About Helene
It all started…
……right around my 42nd Birthday. I had spent many years before then teaching aerobics (hi/lo, step, body sculpt). I had also completed 2 half AND 3 full marathons. I noticed that I did not feel quite as sure-footed and was starting to feel frail in my joints. Sometimes my ankles and knees felt unsteady. I was suffering with some significant tightness in my upper and lower back. My shoulders were rounding forward. To put it bluntly, my posture was going to hell.
As for yoga, I had tried it a few times. Even got a 3 month discounted membership at YogaWorks; where I went dutifully until the membership expired. At the time, I found yoga to be a bit mysterious and I never quite understood what was going on. What do the postures mean? Am I doing this right? What exactly am I doing? Why are we breathing this way?
Yoga finally stuck when I ventured into the hot room--through the 26 +2 series. I found a 2 week/10-day challenge via Groupon and took myself to *Bikram yoga. And that was how they got me. The thing about the Bikram series that made sense to me was the detailed explanation of the benefits and healing properties of each posture. I've been practicing for close to 9 years now...teaching for 4 years—having since attained the 200HR Training Credential at the very same YogaWorks.
Yoga has absolutely improved my quality of life. The frailty in my joints is gone. I no longer have lower back pain but my upper back remains a struggle. However, I am sure that this too, will get better with regular and consistent practice. Yoga has really helped me to build strength in those micro-muscles surrounding the structures around my joints—specifically my knees and ankles. I feel more sure footed. Even when I'm standing, I feel more upright as my posture has improved significantly.
My goal as a teacher is to help us (my students AND me for the over 40 crew) gain some stability back in our bodies. My teaching style is all about helping my students to discover the healing properties of yoga. I bring special focus to elements of foundation alignment, as it is my belief that form should be soundly established before taking a posture deeper. I hope to help you demystify the whole process and show you how to create and maintain your own safe, at home practice.
